Nicholasville approves zoning change for subdivision

A zoning change request for a new subdivision off South Main Street cleared its first reading Monday, but after much discussion by the city commissioners.

The proposal would rezone about 12.5 acres from B-2 business to R-1E residential. The property would be divided into 52 lots for residential construction. It was unanimously approved by the planning and zoning commission, but the city commissioners had a number of questions including the lot size and whether sidewalks would be included along U.S. 27.

After a lengthy discussion, the commission voted 4-0, with Mayor Pete Sutherland not present, to approve the first reading. City Attorney Darren Sammons said there could be further discussions with the developers prior to the second reading, and there could be changes made or conditions added for a compromise on the matter.

In other action, the commission:

• tabled discussion about changes to a job description change in the planning and development office until other descriptions could be approved.

• approved the first reading of a zoning amendment for 16.8 acres on Day Boulevard from B-2 highway business to I-1 light industrial.

• heard an annexation request for property at 682 Richmond Ave.

• approved a letter of credit release for the Shun Manor subdivision.

• approved the interdepartmental transfer of two vehicles.

• tabled a rate adjustment for the planning and zoning department.

• hired a trainee for the water distribution department.
