Jessamine County Public Library encourages the development of lifelong learners and readers by asking families to pledge to read for at least 15 minutes per day starting this month.

Families will log their reading virtually and, thanks to a generous grant from the PNC Foundation, will earn rewards for special reading milestones.

Families can participate in the Family Reading Adventure challenge by signing a pledge card at the JCPL children’s desk between August 2020 and May 2021.

Families will then track their pledge progress and earn rewards via Beanstack, a free online tool provided by JCPL.

“Establishing the habit of reading every day is an important step toward becoming a lifelong learner,” said Kate Irwin, children’s services program coordinator at Jessamine County Public Library. “JCPL aims to partner with families to encourage everyone to adopt the healthy habit of reading.”

For every 30 cumulative days that families fulfill their reading pledge, they earn a badge in the Beanstack virtual platform.

As they earn badges, Family Reading Adventure participants can visit JCPL’s children’s desk and claim an exclusive pin for every participating member of their family along with a reward book for each participant 18 or younger.

Families who complete three 30-day badges before May 2021 will earn a special bonus reward and will be well on their way to becoming a family of lifelong learners.
