Next Saturday, West Jessamine High School will hold a 5K race to hopefully raise $1,500 to donate to the Jessamine County Homeless Coalition and its fight to give shelter to local residents in need.
“Some of us on the student senate are runners and initially loved the idea of starting another 5k in Jessamine County,” WJHS student Will Hemenover said. “We love this community and wanted to give back in a big way.”
The run/walk is a race for all ages and will start at 9 a.m. April 27 behind the West Jessamine Middle School on the home cross country course, located at 1400 Wilmore Road. All proceeds will benefit the JCHC. Signups are available online and the day of the race in person.
“It is a great opportunity to give back to the community while also bonding and promoting health with the community as well,” Hemenover said. “Anyone can sign up until the race starts, and if you aren’t able to run, we would greatly appreciate any donations.”
Hemenover said racegoers can sign up through the QR code on posters posted around the community or through a link on the front page of the WJHS website.
Water and snacks will also be provided for runners the day of the race
“There has always been a connection with our school and the JCHC through volunteer work,” Hemenover said. “We became aware of the increasing necessity for the resources the coalition needs. Our committee believes it’s very important to support those in need in our county.”
The hope is to raise $1,500, Hemenover said, to unite the community in supporting those who are underprivileged while also promoting health.
“We hope to do this race annually, to continue to support the county and JCHC,” Hemenover said.
“It’s surely a proud moment at JCHC when a person or group contacts us ready to help raise funding on behalf of our organization,” JCHC Director Johnny Templin said. “It is the most proud when it’s a group of kids or young adults.  Not only are they helping JCHC today, it’s almost certain to be something they carry with them forever. Just like I did when my brother helped to open my eyes at 19.”
