Asbury mens basketball forward Clayton Winter was named National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) as mens basketball student-athlete of the week, as the Eagles basketball teams continue their 2023-24 campaigns.

Forty-eight points in the first half powered Asbury womens basketball (6-5) to a 77-69 win last Tuesday in Wilmore as they hosted Simmons College. Senior guard Trinity Shearer from Lincoln County poured in 19 points with eight rebounds and two steals. Shearer currently sits at career stats of 960 points, 216 steals, and 242 rebounds.

Junior guard Haleigh Releford from Lincoln County added 12 points and tied Shearer for a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Morgan Flannery from Berea scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds, and a game-high three steals. The Eagles have two games left before Christmas break, both coming in Angola, In., at the Trine University Holiday Classic.

Mens basketball

Despite a season-high 26 points for graduate guard from Owensboro, Dakota Walden, Asbury mens basketball (8-3) slipped to Campbellsville-Harrodsburg on Friday, 92-77. Walden shot 8-14 from the field with two made threes, but the Pioneers from CUH shot 57% from the field to give Asbury only their third loss.

Ben McNew, Jessamine County native, and Dakota Walden combined for 10 of Asbury’s season-high 15 3s on Saturday night in Harrodsburg as the Eagles defeated Crowleys Ridge College, 84-70. Junior forward Clayton Winter grabbed 32 total rebounds to set the Asbury school record as AU out-rebounded Crowleys Ridge 51-33 overall in their eighth win of the season.

Winter Named NCCAA Mens Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week

The NCCAA named Asbury forward Wilmore native Clayton Winter as the Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon. Winter currently leads the NCCAA in total rebounds (136), rebounds per game (12.4), offensive rebounds (62), and offensive rebounds per game (5.6). He totaled 11.0 PPG, 18.3 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 48% FG on the week.

Lexington Clinic Sponsored Asbury Student-Athletes of the Week

Sophomore Morgan Flannery (womens basketball) and senior Clayton Winter (mens basketball) were named the Asbury University Athletes of the Week presented by the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics-Sports Medicine Center. Flannery currently ranks fourth in the NCCAA in steals (32) and ninth in 3PT percentage (46%). Winter leads the NCCAA in rebounding (136 in 11 games).
