Charles Jock Sutherland, 95, husband of Phyllis (PJ) Sutherland, passed away Monday, November 20, 2023, at his home on Fairway Drive West in Nicholasville. Jock was born in Lexington on March 14, 1928, to the late Paul Vernon Sutherland and Hazel Lawson Martin. He spent many great years as both a radio announcer and a basketball coach for Gallitan County and Madisonville, Harrison County then winning the championship in 1979 for Lafayette in Lexington for his alma mater. He’s the only coach to take three Kentucky county schools to the sweet 16. He integrated the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and he was also a veteran of United States Army. Left to cherish his memory are Phyllis (PJ) Sutherland, son Glenn Edwin (Elizabeth), grandchildren Christie Pepper (Seth), Katie Bowen (Matthew) Shelby Orthmeyer (Grant) Michelle Carter (Brian) Mandy Willer (Jeff), as well as 8 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father Paul, mother Hazel, stepfather Joe Martin, and his first wife Theresa Dudley Sutherland and son Charles J. Sutherland. For those who know Jock, on December the 9th at 2 PM at Lafayette gym his celebration of life will take place. After the army salute at 3:30, visitation fellowship and food will be served across the hall in the cafeteria. There will be a big screen playing the 79 Championship as well as pictures of his life. Anyone who has a Jock story will share at this time. In place of flowers, for those who want to please donate to the Jessamine County animal shelter in Jock’s name.
