Asbury Athletics had a busy week last week, with volleyball on the road and mens’ and womens’ soccer hosting a doubleheader on Friday.

Womens’ soccer

Asbury womens’ soccer had a defensive bout with Franklin College last Friday night. The two teams would not score a goal the entire match and the score ended the same way it started: 0-0. Maliya Crump had two saves on the night to complete her clean sheet. Hannah Muncie recorded the only shot on goal for AU on the night.

“As the game went on, we were starting to put some things together. The team is giving the effort needed; we just need time to put it all together. Defensively, we limited their shots, and of course, we love the shutout!” assistant coach Steve Fugmann said.

Mens’ soccer

The Asbury mens’ soccer team (1-2-1) competed in their home opener last Friday night against Greenville University (0-2). Both teams fought relentlessly, putting up a combined 20 shots for the night, but AU ultimately fell to the Panther’s offense and lost in a 2-1 match. Cameron Johnson was AU’s lone goal scorer, found in the 12th minute of the match, assisted by Luke Thomas.

The Eagles then traveled a short distance last Saturday to take on a long-time competitor, Midway University. AU found the back of the net early in the match to lead them to their first win of the 2023 season, 1-0. Freshman Salat Kipterit led the board for Asbury with five shots and two on goal. Kipterit, with his first collegiate goal, was AU’s lone scorer on the day, with an assist by Pascal Muller.

“Proud of the guys today as they had to show grit. They have improved in the areas that we have previously conceded in. Winning on the road is never easy, and with this result, we continue to learn more about ourselves. Humble and hungry as we prepare for the next one,” said Head Coach  Ben Andrews

Volleyball

The Asbury Volleyball team traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee to compete last Friday and Saturday at the Sewanee Invitational. The Eagles would split the weekend at 2-2, gaining wins over Agnes Scott College and Huntingdon College.

Lucy Kate Gray dished a game-high 41 assists while Asbury volleyball (3-3) split their Friday doubleheader, falling to Greensboro but beating Huntingdon for their third win of the season. Riley McChord and Lauran Barber were rocks for Asbury defensively, combining for 32 digs on the night.

The Eagles competed in day two of the invitational, facing off against Agnes Scott and the host team, Sewanee. AU took an impressive 3-0 win against Agnes Scott but fell to Sewanee in an intense five sets, 3-2. Luce Kate Gray was a tremendous piece for AU, combining for 56 assists on the day. Gray grabbed 16 against Agnes Scott and an outstanding 40 against Sewanee.

Lex Clinic Athletes of the Week

Crump and Kipterit were named the Asbury University Athletes of the Week, presented by the Lexington Clinic Orthopedics-Sports Medicine Center. Crump recorded a clean sheet on Friday in a 0-0 tie with Franklin. Kipterit recorded his first collegiate goal in a 1-0 win over Midway.
