The National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) announced eight Asbury University Athletics programs as 2022-23 NCCAA Scholar-Teams. To receive this award, teams met a minimum GPA of 3.40 on a 4.00 scale for all combined student-athletes on the team.

During the fall semester, Asbury mens’ and womens’ cross country teams both earned NCCAA Scholar-Team awards. The men finished with an overall 3.58 GPA, while the women secured a 3.65.

In the spring semester, AU represented six winter and spring sports earning Scholar-Team honors. The teams included baseball (3.57), softball (3.43), mens’ track and field (3.41), womens’ track and field (3.70), mens’ tennis (3.59), and womens’ tennis (3.44). As an athletics department, TeamAU earned an overall GPA of 3.48 for the 2023 spring semester and honored 37 graduating scholar-athletes.

These awards highlight AU student-athletes representing TRAIN in the Serve > Train > Compete mission, excelling in the classroom through discipline and commitment.

“We are very proud of the good work done by our student-athletes both in competition and in the classroom. Asbury is grateful to be a part of the National Christian College Athletic Association and the championship experiences it provides our students and coaches,” said Mark Whitworth, Asbury Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Strategic Communications

Baseball earns ABCA Academic Excellence Award

For the fifth time in as many years, Asbury’s baseball team has been named as an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award recipient. The award is given to teams by The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

To receive the award, teams must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for 2022-2023. (The grading curriculum is on the 4.0 scale).

This award has come after another successful year on the field, winning 23 games, but it also shows the team’s dedication to be committed in the classroom and the field. AU baseball had an overall GPA of 3.52 in the spring and a 3.41 in the fall. Asbury is one of only three schools in the NCAA DII or DIII in Kentucky to earn the honor.

“We are honored to be recognized by the ABCA for the fifth straight year,” said head coach Manny Cervantes. “Earning this recognition is a testimony of our team’s culture and the players’ dedication and hard work. Our pursuit of excellence in character, academics, and athletics is rooted in our desire to serve and honor our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Our coaching staff and administration are extremely proud of this team’s academic success.”
