The Asbury University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Kelsey Lang has been named senior woman administrator (SWA) and will begin her responsibilities immediately.

Lang was promoted to associate head athletic trainer at the beginning of 2023 after serving as an Asbury assistant athletic trainer from 2019-2021. She will continue her Athletic Training duties in addition to the SWA position. In the role of associate head athletic trainer, she is currently responsible for all medical care of Asbury womens soccer, womens basketball, baseball and cheerleading teams.

The Washington, Pennsylvania native graduated from West Virginia University in 2017 and later earned a master’s in sports administration and certification in intercollegiate athletic administration from Western Kentucky University in 2019. Before coming to Asbury, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Midway University from 2017-2019.

“I’m thrilled to accept the senior woman administrator position at Asbury University,” Lang said. “I hope to continue to advocate for our student-athletes and coaches while supporting our continued growth and success. I have received an overwhelming amount of support from all of athletics during this transition and I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to further my representation in Asbury Athletics.”

Lang has been a valuable asset to Asbury Athletics since she joined TeamAU in 2019, using her commitment and passion to provide student-athletes the highest quality of care possible. She has continued to develop her leadership abilities, currently leading the KORT Physical Therapy Clinical Excellence Academy and the College Athletic Trainers KORT Physical Therapy Group.

At the start of 2023, Lang also helped begin the Asbury Women Student-Athletes Support Initiative, which focuses on wellness, mental skills, and nutrition. The group is led by Lang and has a mission of supporting female student-athletes in their athletic and overall life journey.

“We are very pleased to have Kelsey serve in this important role for TeamAU,” Mark Whitworth, VP for Intercollegiate Athletics and University Communications, said. “She brings a strong commitment to our mission along with great professionalism and a heart for our student-athletes. Kelsey will continue to grow the SWA role at Asbury that Erin Ferguson worked so tirelessly to establish.”.

Costa shoots 65 in European team championship

Asbury men’s golf sophomore, João Costa, had a big opening round for Portugal’s Collegiate National Team at the Green Resort Hrubá Borsá in Slovakia.

Costa recorded a tie for the lowest score on the first day of the European Amateur Team Championship. He shot a 65 (-7) for the Portuguese team with a total of eight birdies to only one lonely bogey on the day. The team-low score helped propel the team to defeat the Czech Republic on the opening round of play, 4-3.

“João is a dedicated, hardworking player who continuously strives for perfection, so I’m so happy for him to have made the Portugal international team,” said Mens Head Golf Coach Joe Crouse. “This was a goal he set for himself early in the spring, and to post personal best low competition scores. I’m excited for João and the team as we head into the fall season.”

Costa will return to Wilmore in the fall to begin his sophomore season and continue his Asbury golfing career. Costa will look to build on a successful first year with the program. Just in Costa’s freshman season, he brought home a win in the Spalding Spring Invitational and collected several top-ten finishes in his first year with the program.

Costa and the rest of the Asbury team will begin their 2023fFall campaign in August, seeking a third consecutive NCCAA National Championship appearance and a second title (2021)
