The Riney B. Park Aquatic Center won’t meet its previous Memorial Day deadline, and there isn’t a new one yet in sight.

The Nicholasville Jessamine County Parks and Recreation Department recently released an update on the aquatic center’s progress.

Since the beginning of March, when Parks and Recreation received the pool’s replacement parts, contractors have been working nearly “around the clock” to meet its Memorial Day deadline, according to Parks and Recreation Director Duane McCuddy.

Now, the department is at its last few finishing touches of its remodel of the pool, and must receive approval through state inspection. Parks and Recreation’s plans for the next phase of construction have been submitted to Frankfort and are currently awaiting approval. McCuddy said this means the pool can’t open for Memorial Day weekend, but that they are “fully committed to opening the center as soon as everything is finalized”

“From what I understand, I think they’ve got two inspectors and throughout the state there’s a lot of pools trying to open and they’re probably short-staffed like a lot of people,” McCuddy said.

McCuddy said the project has been a big undertaking. The team has renovated “the pump house, the filtration systems, we’re putting new features in the main pool area, we’re putting a new splash pad.”

When the aquatic center does open, McCuddy said there will likely be a family plan available for purchase, but as of right now, these aren’t for sale.

“You know, we don’t want to take people’s money right now and then have things not go right and we have to issue refunds. We just want to make sure we’re fair with everybody,” McCuddy said.
