Around this time each year, Jessamine County Public Library and Jessamine County Animal Care and Control host the annual Boo-Wow Walk.

For the last decade, pet-owners, pet-lovers and pups alike have gathered at the fairgrounds to celebrate Halloween.

People bring their dogs decked out in creative costumes, vote on the best-dressed pup and explore treat stations and other offerings from local vendors.

This year, because the need to prevent large crowds from gathering, the 11th annual Boo-Wow walk will be held virtually on the JCPL Facebook page.

Though we will certainly miss seeing the dressed-up dogs of Jessamine County in-person, a virtual event provides even more opportunity for the community to participate in the festivities.

Perhaps your dog didn’t graduate top of their class in obedience school, has a hard time with crowds or simply won’t keep their costume on for very long. This year, your four-legged friend can still compete.

You can construct an original, handmade costume for your pet, involve the whole family in a group costume with your canine or grab a cute and clever ready-made costume from the store.

When your pup is all dressed up and ready to go, simply snap a photo and, between now and Oct. 30, submit it via the Boo-Wow Walk webform, which can be found on the JCPL website and the Virtual Boo-Wow Walk Facebook event page.

When you submit a photo of your dog to the Virtual Boo-Wow Walk: Parade of Pups, you enter to win one of several incredible prizes donated by local pet-friendly vendors, including a number of $50 PetSmart gift cards, dog treats, toys and more.

Instead of voting on Boo-Wow’s best in show this year, the 10 winning pets will be selected at random during a live, virtual drawing at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. The prize drawing will premiere live on the JCPL Facebook page.

In the weeks leading up to the prize drawing, JCPL will share submissions of canine Boo-Wow participants on its social media channels. Keep an eye out for this virtual parade of pups and be sure to like and share your picks for best costume with your friends.
