Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

When the nights and mornings get cooler, and the leaves start to fall, it can only mean one thing. Halloween is right around the corner! The older I get the more I love October. And the older I get, the more I allow myself to get into Halloween again like a little kid.

There is a small season between when you’re considered “too old” to trick or treat and when you can jump right back into the action as an adult when you start having your own children. For me, I am happily enjoying the second season and dress up every chance I get with my own kids.

Wanting to bring some of that here to the newspaper, I asked my boss if we could do a costume contest with some “creepy” and “cool” giveaways. Since my time here at The Jessamine Journal, we have not done any contests and what better way than to bring that newspaper tradition back to Jessamine County than with a round-up of some of the community’s best costumes.

The prizes are being kept secret for now, but we are currently accepting picture submissions for cutest, scariest and most original Halloween costume. Not more than a few minutes after posting this contest on social media and I already had our first submission in my inbox. I have received a few more since and can’t wait to see what everyone submits as we get closer to the deadline.

All submissions have to be in our office by Oct. 29. The winners of the contest will be announced in our edition which just happens to come out Oct. 31. What better way to celebrate Halloween, right? I thought so too, and I am excited and overjoyed that my publisher agreed and had faith in the idea of our first contest in a long time.

So, mark your calendars, and get those costumes ready! Let’s make this a great success and show off the Halloween spirit Jessamine County has to offer. I can’t wait to see all your scary, cute and original costumes as we get closer to the arguably one of the most awaited day in October.
