Military Missions helps veterans oversea

One of the things I like most about my job is when someone comes to my office and tells me a story about something so great I can’t wait to write the article and share it with all of you. Such an instance happened this week. Not only was it a great story of a company in the community pushing forward to help those less fortunate, but it was a story which involved our armed forces overseas. One cause that is always near and dear to my heart is anything associated with the military, and this nonprofit did not disappoint.

I don’t want to leak all the spoilers, as I do have an article planned for next week’s newspaper. However, the organization deserves extra recognition as far as I am concerned, and I can’t wait until next week to talk about it and start to spread the word starting with all of you. When the gentlemen first walked into the office, he told me that the organization is primarily located in Lexington. My heart sank, because being a community newspaper the walls of what I can write about do not extend beyond Jessamine County. Although the longer he spoke, we were able to tie the organization to a company here which is going above and beyond in helping the nonprofit succeed.

The organization, Military Missions, is made up entirely of volunteers who carry out a mission to support and honor active-duty military members. They do this by receiving donations nationwide to fill care boxes to send to our troops overseas. The only catch is, although every item is donated and there is no overhead for the volunteers, the organization still needs to pay for postage. A price that can climb pretty steep really fast when you consider how many of our active military members or troops look forward to a box from home filled with goodies most of us take for granted but is a luxury to them.

These items include candy (individually wrapped), snacks and drink mixes (single-serving size), canned items, personal care items and some miscellaneous items as well. Monetary donations are also excepted to help buy for postage or buy additional items. Or, other options are available as well such as adopting a hero or volunteering to help. Whatever is donated that cannot fit in a box, the organizations work to make sure those items still make it to a veteran by donations at several centers across Kentucky, such as Tomson-Hood in Wilmore.

You can read more about this organization’s efforts to help active deployed military men and women overseas in next week’s Jessamine Journal, but if you are like me and can’t wait to spread the good news about such a great local organization helping veterans, you can visit their website at www.military-missions.org to learn more.
