After 10 years in Nicholasville, Southern States is closing Aug. 31.

Communications Specialist for Southern States Chris Carter said the Jessamine County location wasn’t able to generate enough profit to remain open.

“Unfortunately, we have not been able to generate the profits required to sustain the Nicholasville location and serve those customers effectively,” Carter said.

Southern States specializes in agricultural products for farmers and the general public as well. Located at 701 Nicholasville Bypass, Southern States opened in 2008. Carter said the impact on the community over the years has been positive.

“We were very involved in the community holding local events at the store and getting involved in other community events in the Nicholasville area,” Carter said. “We hope that residents saw us as a positive influence on the community.”

While he is sad to see the store close, Carter encouraged customers to visit the other locations in the Bluegrass.

“We will certainly miss serving this wonderful community and holding local community-involved events, but we hope that residents will visit our nearby Harrodsburg and Richmond locations to continue getting the same knowledgeable service they’ve come to expect from Southern States,” Carter said.

Southern States has also taken steps to make sure customers who relied on the Nicholasville location will not be affected by the closing.

“Our farmers who order bulk fertilizer and bulk feed will be served by our in-field sales team through our Richmond and Harrodsburg locations and our fertilizer plant in Nicholasville,” Carter said. “We will continue to provide delivery service, so customers should experience no interruption in their current service.”

Carter said clearance sales will begin Aug. 1 and conclude on Aug. 31, when the store officially closes.
