Margo Young, the owner at Capelli Salon in Jessamine County, has been in the business for 26 years and has two goals: do great hair and make sure her customers feel like family.

“We are all just a group of family,” Young said. “I want clients to come here and feel like they are a part of the family when they walk in the door. I tell people all the time if you are having a bad day, you pop on in here and we will cheer you right on up. We are not a traditional salon in that respect, and that is something that I try to maintain.”

In business for five years, Capelli Salon is located at 209 East Brannon Road in Nicholasville, and is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Services offered include cuts, color, chemical services, agave treatment, Brazilian blowouts and waxing. Prices range from $30 and up for a haircut, to $65 to $145 for color, depending on the customer’s needs. Online booking is available, and students receive a 20-percent discount on services throughout the school year.

Young said besides making sure her client’s hair looks great, coming to work with her favorite people is what makes her job the best.

“It is the people that I am in contact with; they are like family,” Young said. “It makes my job seem like it is not really a job — getting to come to work, socialize and get to be with my favorite people. Our clients are like family. I love making people have a smile on their face and transforming their hair. When they look good, they feel good.”

An exclusive Joico product salon, Young said it is important to her to offer this product exclusively, as she has no knowledge of any other salon in Jessamine County or Lexington doing the same.

“I am really proud of the product line that we use,” Young said. “It creates healthy hair. It is not damaging. What we strive for is being consistent.”

Young said customers can rest assured when they come in her salon wanting one thing, they will not have to worry about getting something different the next time. Trusting her stylists is something she loves and they all take turns doing each others’ clients’ hair and bouncing ideas off each other.

“I have been in so many salons in the past where you have two girls here and three girls here and they all just gossip and talk behind each others back,” Young said. “I wanted to build something where we are all a team and we all work together. We all bounce ideas off of each other and lift each other up. That is what I love. I can trust my stylist to do my clients’ hair and I will do their clients’ hair. There is no jealousy.”

Bekah Crawley has worked for Capelli Salon for three years and describes the atmosphere and her colleagues as a laid-back, fun group of people.

“We love our clients and I think that is what sets us apart,” Crawley said. “We treat our clients like family. It is a job, but we enjoy our job, and we love our clients. I think that is why we get so many happy people who come back. When you take care of your people, they take care of you, and I really feel like that makes a difference. It is not just a walk in get your hair done and leave and I don’t remember your name or what we talked about. We take the time to get to know our people and I think that really makes a difference.”

Crawley said another aspect that sets Capelli’s apart from many other salons is communication.

“I think a lot of stylists beat around the bush,” Crawley said. “If we need to tell you that what you want is going to fry your hair off, we are going to tell you. That sounds really terrible and harsh, but when someone walks out the door, my name is on that person’s hair. We don’t want to have someone who is unhappy and spreading bad news. If you have one unhappy person, they will tell 10 people. If you have one happy person they might tell a few of their friends. Bad news travels faster than good news, so we try to keep with the good.”

Crawley said although the group might have its up and downs from time to time, like Young, she believes they are all family, and that is something customers not only pick up on, but tell them all the time.

“All of our clients love coming in here because they feel better,” Crawley said. “I don’t think that it is because their hair is done; it is because their spirit is lifted. Because they can come in and our chairs are a safe space for them to unload on good news, bad news or whatever. That is part of our job. We take care of our people. That is what sets us apart.”
