Two words can make world of difference

By Michael Caldwell

Thank you. Those two simple words have tremendous power, especially when expressed with sincerity and gratitude to true heroes.

That is exactly what the men and women who selflessly serve our great nation in the armed forces are to us.

With Veterans Day just around the corner, it is the perfect time to pause and show our support for all those who have answered the call of duty.

Jessamine County has a rich history of pride and patriotism.

Thousands have stepped forward to do their part over the years. For that, we should be eternally grateful.

Freedom comes at a high price, and many of Jessamine’s sons and daughters have paid it.

Pages 6 and 7 recognize a few dozen of these individuals; servicemen and women who family members wanted to express that extra bit of gratitude.

Sadly, Veterans Day may be among the most overlooked of holidays, but the others wouldn’t be possible without the namesake of this one.

In some ways it seems harder for people to celebrate. There is no pumpkin to carve, turkey to bake or tree to cover in sparkling ornaments.

Unfortunately, for some citizens, the day is just another quasi-holiday in which government offices close. It holds little meaning beyond that.

That is truly disappointing.

Veterans Day should be as precious to Americans as Independence Day.

It is often said, “freedom isn’t free.” And that is certainly true. It is our nation’s veterans who pay the high price for this ideal that serves as the foundation of our entire country.

We can all do more to honor our veterans — and those currently serving — on this day and throughout the year.

A few kind words of appreciation can go a long way. A handshake or a hug can be even better.

If you see a veteran today, or any day for that matter, take a moment to say “thank you” for their dedication and patriotism that has kept our great country strong.
