This year, the West Jessamine High School Band will play patriotic music and the Armed Forces Medley. Six veterans and Vietnam veterans will be honored at the ceremony.

Adjutant of The American Legion Ray E. Miller Post No. 63 in Nicholasville, Don Thornton said most of the participants of the celebration are veterans, except vocalists.

“There are a lot of Vietnam veterans in Jessamine that not a lot of people know about,” Thornton said. “It is the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. So regardless of where they served they will be honored.”

Thornton said the celebration will likely end at noon, and requested that people arrive earlier than 11 a.m.

“We are going to try to park everyone on the National Cemetary property,” Thornton said. “There will be golf carts to and from the ceremony for people who need assistance.”

Thornton said he believes the Camp Nelson veteran ceremony is a great and compelling program, because of the large number of veteran participants and the exceptional vocalists.

“I think everyone has had someone they are close to serve in the armed forces,” Thornton said. “And it’s a great way to honor the men and women, whether it was peace or war time, and that’s basically what that day is about — honoring our veterans.”

The program also includes the singing of “God Bless America” by Beth Furr, Presentation of Colors by the Caswell Safely Honor Guard, National Anthem by Michael Preacely, Pledge of Allegiance by Skip Kraemer, Keynote Speaker Juan Jackson, a special presentation and much more.
