Spring has sprung in Jessamine County, and so have spring sports. This month the Journal’s Eden Slone sat down with Maddie Horn, a star senior catcher on the impressive East Jessamine varsity softball team who has big plans for the future, both on and off the field.

Q: What made you want to start playing softball?

A: I started playing softball when I was three and a half. My parents wanted me to be involved in something outside of the house from an early age and signed me up for a local T-ball league. I started playing and fell in love with it. I have been playing ever since.

Q: When did you start playing softball for East Jessamine?

A: I joined the varsity team when I was in middle school, which was exciting but also nerve-wracking. I was nervous to play with so many older girls. Once I got there, though, it was the best decision I have ever made. The seniors at the time were so welcoming and great leaders. Some of them play collegiate softball now, and I love keeping up with them. Having the opportunity to play at a higher level at a young age improved me as a player and person.

Q: Now that you are a senior, do you feel like you are a similar leader to the younger players as those seniors that made such an impact on you?

A: Yes. There are only two seniors on the team, so we are looked up to a lot. I love being there for the younger girls. Whether it be being there for them for softball, life advice, or just being a friend, I love being there.

Q: What are some of the things you are passionate about beyond softball?

A: I have been really involved in student government at East Jessamine. I also am a KHSAA HYPE athlete student leader, which is where athletes from across the state get to come together and improve student-athlete leadership. I love being able to lead and represent my school in a way that I think it should be represented.

Q: What are your goals for your final softball season at East Jessamine?

A: We have high expectations and goals for our team this year. We are hoping to make a run at the region and state tournaments. To best prepare for those big tournaments, we take every game seriously and work hard. I love the vibes of the regional tournament–the games are so exciting, and it really is anybody’s game.

Q: After graduation this spring, what are your future plans?

A: I am excited to be furthering my academic and athletic career at the University of Pikeville, where I will have the opportunity to continue to play softball as I get my degree. I plan on majoring in Human and Health Performance and minoring in Sports Broadcasting. I hope to become a physical therapist or athletic trainer after college.

Q: What will you carry with you to college from EJ softball?

A: The work ethic and determination, definitely.
