Asbury’s tennis and track and field teams take the reins as the basketball and swimming seasons begin to wrap up their regular seasons.

Women’s basketball

Jan 31 – “I told the ladies at half time that we know who we are and we are a team that plays physical and fast. So I challenged them to be who we are and pick it up. They heard me loud and clear, then met the challenge!”

These were the words of head coach Chad Mayes after the Eagles moved to an 11-9 record following their win in Gallatin, Tennessee this week.

The Eagles took an 89-75 victory over the Flames from Welch College. Sophomores Tiffani Riley, Haleigh Releford, and junior Trinity Shearer combined for 42 points in the victory.

Feb 3 – For the first time this season, the Eagles scored 100 points in a single game. Although Asbury trailed at the end of the first half, senior Jaclynn Ruble, Shearer, and junior Spencer Harvey led the Eagles in a 100-67 lead in Charlotte, North Carolina Friday.

The Johnson and Wales Wildcats put up a fight with 70 points, but AU moved to a 12-9 season record.

Feb 4 – With a final score of 84-68 in Asheville, N.C., the Asbury women’s basketball team won their third game of the week. Once again, the Eagles struggled to find momentum in the first half of the game but had a surge in the second and took their 13th win.

Releford led the win against Warren Wilson with 25 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, and her first double-double. AU looks to take their last three wins of the season at home.

Men’s track & field

Feb 3 – The recently relaunched Asbury track and field team competed in their season debut this week in Cedarville, Ohio. Brand new records were set by freshman Jessamine County native Ava Miller (5:55.53 indoor), Louisville native Luke Wheatley (4:38.92 Men’s Mile Run), freshman Davis Brown (2:00.08 Men’s 800 Meter Run), and freshman Sam Webb (54.76 Men’s 400 Meter Run).

“We had a great night for our first meet of the year. Asbury has only competed in a handful of indoor meets ever in the school history. However, there were still some established school records that we were attacking tonight,” said associate Head Coach Randy Crist.

Men’s tennis

Feb 3 – With a season kick-off at home, the Eagles took a 5-4 win over Rhodes College on Friday. Sophomore Alejandro Caceres and senior from Spain Gregorio Ingles took the victory in their number one doubles match for AU, 8-2.

The pair also notched a pair of singles wins.

Freshman Youssef Ismail debuted his AU tennis career by securing the final win of the day, 6-3, 3-6, (11-9) 11-9.

Athletes of the week

This week’s Chick-Fil-A Featured athletes are Sophomores Mary-Grayce Narron and Luke Wheatley.

Narron is a Christian ministry major aspiring to start a non-profit ministry geared toward women and young girls. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends; her favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 27:3-5.

Wheatley is a finance major hoping to enter wealth management and sales. His hobbies are running, cycling, learning the guitar, and basically anything outside on a nice day. 1 Corinthians 10:13 is his favorite Bible verse. Thanks to Chick-Fil-A for featuring this week’s AU athletes.
