The Nicholasville City Commission met on Monday, November 28, for its regular meeting.

The Commission will see changes in January after November’s election. The new mayor will be Alex Carter, who ran unchallenged. The new commission will include returning City Commissioners Bethany Davis Brown, Patty Teater, previous Mayor Pete Sutherland and newcomer Charles ‘Dexter’ Knight.

But, for now, the commission is the same as it was before the election.

The meeting was short but eventful.

For commissioner’s business, Commissioner Teater spoke about the Women in Leadership panel organized by Nancy Wiser of Wiser Strategies at the Jessamine Career And Technology Center. The panel consisted of Teater herself, Nicholasville Police Lieutenant Alexus Jones, Charle Reed with the tourism commission, Laura Bewley and Renee Rhineheimer.

“I feel like sometimes, you go to these things, and you think high school students are just signing up to get out of class. But, when we had our question-and-answer things at the end of the event, they had great questions,” Commissioner Teater said.

Even when they started to cut the students off, in fear of cutting into the time for their next class, Commissioner Teater said they continued asking questions.

Teater said she was proud of city workers representing Nicholasville and was very excited about the city’s future after seeing all 35 young women who attended the panel.

Nicholasville Utilities requested the commission to accept and sign round two of the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority (KIA) Cleaner Water Grant. The city received one last year for about $858,000. This year’s grant is for $1,931,000. The Department of Utilities will use these funds to help fund the construction of a 24-inch waterline from the water plant into town. A representative with Nicholasville utility said the measure would come in handy.

The commission accepted the grant in a vote.

A representative from the Nicholasville Police Department said the department raised $2,000 to purchase winter coats and hats for school children in need.

Several local public safety departments are holding donation drives for this winter season until Friday, December 16. Every Friday at the Nicholasville Walmart, they will collect toys, hats, coats, and other winter clothes for children up to the age of 12 years old.

Additionally, City Clerk Kathy Walker had a few temporary assignments at the fire department to end officially during this meeting. William Gover temporarily took the role of a captain and has now been reassigned to his former lieutenant status with an hourly rate of $17.38 per hour.

Austin McKee temporarily took the position of lieutenant and has now been reassigned to his former firefighter status with an hourly rate of $15.32.
