The Jessamine County Historical Society will be hosting its annual chili cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 8, from noon until 3:00 p.m. – or until the chili runs out.

The cook-off will take place in the blue building in City/County Park. In 2021, when it was held at the Wilmore Municipal Building, the residents of Wilmore won the right to boast that the best chili cooks in the county lived there.

It will be up to the guests at this year’s cook-off to determine which community wins the bragging rights for 2022.

For a $10 admission – children 12 and under eat free – everyone is welcome to sample the various submissions, eat their fill of their favorites, and cast their vote for the community which produces the best chili cooks.

The historical society will provide sides like cheese and oyster crackers, as well as beverages and desserts. The chili will be provided by members of the community and by local restaurants from Keene, Wilmore, and Nicholasville.

Mayor Harold Rainwater, among others, will be representing Wilmore. Current City Commissioner Alex Carter is one of the cooks who will represent that city.

As nighttime temperatures coax us into digging out the sweaters and jackets we stored away last spring, and as trees shed their uniform green to uncover more varied hues, it’s a good time to warm up with a bowl of chili and help support the Jessamine County Historical Society. Do you like it spicy or mild? Beans or no beans? Does white chili really count as chili?

Join us on Saturday, Oct. 8, and vote for your choice.
