The Nicholasville City Commission passed motions regarding the comprehensive plan and a student internship in its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Sept. 12.

It is almost time for an update on the City of Nicholasville’s comprehensive plan. A comprehensive plan guides the city’s future and what it should prioritize in city planning. It affects how people work, travel, play, and live in the city.

Nicholasville’s comprehensive plan has a few sections: goals and objectives, economic and commercial development, residential development, transportation, infrastructure and community facilities, environment, tourism and historic preservation, land use, and implementation. Read the most recent comprehensive plan here: www.nicholasville.org/planning/Comp_Plan_2017_ver_7.pdf.

The last comprehensive plan was updated in 2017. Kentucky state law requires each municipality to update its comprehensive plan every five years. In 2017, there were 20 members on the comprehensive plan committee. Nicholasville administration suggested a different approach to committee selection to lessen the number of members.

Nicholasville administration requested to allow only one member from each of the area governing bodies- Wilmore, the Nicholasville City Commission, and the Jessamine County Fiscal Court, and at least one at-large member from each of the governing bodies – this could be someone from a government department or a resident.

The commission voted to accept this request, and Mayor Pete Sutherland appointed Commissioner Betty Black to the comprehensive committee since she had previously expressed interest. There was not an at-large member appointed at this meeting.

Also, in this meeting, Sokpean Uy, an East Jessamine High School student, received approval from the commission for a part-time paid internship with the Nicholasville Planning and Zoning Department. This past summer, Uy was chosen as one of the 13 Jessamine County students to take part in the Governor’s School for the Arts. Their art form in this program was architecture and design.

The commission passed a road closure motion. On October 31, the city will close Main Street for a Halloween celebration from 5:30 – 8 p.m.
