The Trabue chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has announced plans for the annual observance of Constitution Week, September 17-23, 2022. September 1 is officially recognized as Constitution Day in America. Sadly, this date is often referred to as “America’s forgotten holiday.”

On Saturday, September 17, a Bell Ringing ceremony will take place at 4 p.m. on the front lawn of the Jessamine County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend and join in the ringing of the bells, marking the signing of the U. S. Constitution in 1787. The event is open to everyone, and veterans are particularly encouraged to attend the bell-ringing ceremony.

The celebration of the constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1955, when the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 every year to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

“We plan to continue each year to bring attention to this document, which ensures our liberties, our freedoms, and our inalienable rights,” said Virginia Simpson, chairwoman of the Constitution Week Committee for Trabue chapter.

To mark the celebration, a Proclamation was signed and presented to Simpson on August 16 by county Judge=Executive, David West.

Simpson is coordinating with fourth and fifth-grade teachers at Brookside Elementary to deliver printed materials about Constitution Week for classrooms.

On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the constitution. As the delegates were leaving the Pennsylvania State House at 4 p.m., bells were rung to signify the signing of the constitution.

Membership in DAR is open to any woman 18 years or older by documentation of her direct lineage to an ancestor, male or female, who aided the cause of American independence through either military, civil or patriotic service.
