In the aftermath of the Uvalde, Texas shooting last month, Jessamine County Schools is revising its safety measures and precautions.

“We use information like what’s occurred in Texas to inform future decisions. We will gather as much information as we can gather so we can learn from that, and ensure that we are taking every measure that we can to overcome some of the challenges that they encounter.” Matthew Moore, Superintendent of Jessamine County Schools said.

Jessamine County Schools works with the Nicholasville Police Department, the Wilmore Police Department, the local fire departments, local emergency responders as well as the Jessamine County Sheriff’s Department. Together, they review safety procedures and protocols for school safety.

“We bring that group of individuals together along with the Kentucky Center for Safe Schools to sit down and really have some deep discussions about some of the potential challenges, associated with and risks associated with school safety. It is a really comprehensive process that we go through, and we try to do that annually,” Moore said.

The specific changes made to security and safety are kept private in order to further protect the students and faculty at the schools. The process of revising and editing safety protocols was finished in May, and final copies will be given to the emergency responders so they can operate off the same plans as the school system. The safety plans are also used to train the staff and school administrators.

“We engage in a community event in the summers. We select a different school and we do scenarios with local law enforcement and emergency responders and invite our staff to that and some of our students. We try to create scenarios, and then have law enforcement and staff respond accordingly to those,” Moore said.
