Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

A round-up of all things Jessamine County…

In recent months, I met longtime Jessamine Journal Publisher Ed Easterly, now retired.  He is a good guy who shared a lot of wisdom acquired from his many decades of service at the helm of this newspaper. It’s fun looking back at old editions and seeing the county’s past. Much respect goes to Easterly for his passion for the community.

On that note, as editor I’d like to say that the Jessamine Journal is intent on adding more stories and doing a better job connecting with the community.

This week — we’ve increased the page count from eight to 12 pages — more news is flowing in because my lovely wife Nicole Bowman-Layton has been busy helping me cover Jessamine County events, happenings and personalities.

An award winning journalist, Nicole is a longtime journalist who has worked for newspapers big and small. In recent weeks, she has been covering Nicholasville City Council and Jessamine County Fiscal Court. Nicole is poised to connect with Wilmore too. Email her at nsbowman@hotmail.com

On that note, I’d like to start connecting with Jessamine high schools’ to start publishing local sports stories. It’s a work in progress rebooting coverage, but if you’d like to freelance, please reach out to me at miles.layton@winchestersun.com

Jessamine athletic directors — please reach out to me with coach contact information. When I was in high school, it was a mark of pride to have a story appear in the local newspaper.

We need to build our sports coverage because rooting for the home team is important.

And please, if you want to share your opinions with the community, Jessamine Journal welcomes all points of view.

Another thing — Asbury University — wow! I can’t wait to explore and learn more about this institution of higher learning.

On that note, Jessamine Journal is hiring a reporter — hint, hint, any Asbury seniors majoring in journalism. Job offers you a chance to build some clips, earn some money and make a difference in the community.

Speaking of Asbury reminds me of the importance of faith plays to any place, large or small. We’d like to know more about churches, pastors and congregations.

For example, Edgewood Baptist Church is looking for old photos of Edgewood’s church family or events for our upcoming Anniversary Celebration on June 26, 2022 celebrating 50+ years. If you have any to share, please contact the church office at 885-6211.
Lastly, thanks for your support — let’s start a new chapter at the Jessamine Journal.
