Nicholasville City Commission unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that will annex more than 122 acres at its Jan. 10 meeting in commission chambers.

In November 2019, the commission also read a first reading of an ordinance regarding the annexation of the property, located at 3090 Ashgrove Road.

According to a previous report, then Planning and Zoning Administrative Officer Dean Anness said the property was to include the development of about 250 high-end apartments, 140 senior living and 140 single-family homes.
The zoning for the property already has been approved. The only difference between what was submitted in 2019 and what was submitted this year is that the locations of the senior living and multi-family homes have flipped.

A memorandum of agreement to be signed by Mayor Pete Sutherland regarding the annexation was tabled until the commission’s next meeting. Council received the incorrect version of the document at the Jan. 10 meeting.

During the meeting, the commission learned that the square-footage requirements set in the memorandum will make the development match what is being built on a property west of the proposed annexed acreage.

Also during the meeting, Assistant Chief Marty Kazuk said the fire department received a $3,200 grant from the Kentucky Fire Commission, which will go toward the purchase of a thermal imaging camera.
“The grant will help offset the costs of equipping the new ladder truck when it comes in,” Kazuk said.

He also noted that the department applied for another grant that will help pay for a new four-story training tower at the agency’s training center along Brown Street.
