WJHS students named to Youth Salute

Twenty-three students from West Jessamine High School are among hundreds of high schools in Central Kentucky recognized in this year’s “Youth Salute.”
Students were nominated by teachers, guidance counselors and principals for this year’s Youth Salute.
To qualify, the student had to be a junior (senior class of 2021), have a 3.0 GPA or better and have held at least two leadership roles to which they were chosen by their peers or an adult leader within the past two years in school, religious or community sponsored organizations.
The Journal will feature several students each week.
John Schaefer
John is a junior officer and ambassador for Military Leadership and a JCTC ambassador. He is a lifeguard for Professional Pool Management of Kentucky.
He plans to become a firefighter and go to school for fire administration.
Joshua Bleuel
Joshua is senior patrol leader at Boy Scout Troop 110 in Lexington and quartermaster at KAWIDA Lodge for the Bluegrass Council. He also participates in National Youth Leadership Training and archery.
He plans to major in computer animation and video game design and to attend Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
Katelyn Scales
Katelyn is Jessamine County FFA secretary and a member of the Growing Leaders FFA Committee. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a JCTC student ambassador and Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. She placed third in her age division for Ham House Speech at the Kentucky State Fair, qualified for the NBHA open and youth World championships, placed second in the equine impromptu speech category at regional competition, first place in horse evaluation at UK Field Day and second place in the state horsemanship CDE at Murray State University.
She plans to major in chemistry and attend pharmacy school.
Macy Laine Brockman
Macy Laine is student delegate to Bluegrass Higher Education Consortium’s Regional Education Summit, a graduate and global traveler with Kentucky Youth Leadership’s KYLEAD program, a Crescendo student director and choreographer, a WJHS student senate juniro class representative, assistant state manager for Kentucky Conservatory Theatre Broadway in the Park, WJHS Competition Show Choir, Chorale, West Side Sound and Chamber Singers, a WJHS theater performer, crew member, assistant stage manager and assistant director, a performer with Jessamine County Arts, a participant with We the People … The Citizen and Constitution, and a member of the International Thespian Society.
She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in acting and a master’s of fine arts degree in theatrical production and seek a career in the arts community
McKenna Walker
McKenna is a member of the Colt Chorale and BETA Club, She participated in American Eventing Championships, Special Needs Aid, is a volunteer stable hand at Dreamfield Farm, placed 19th nationally in Junior Novice at Eventing, an assistant groom for the University of Kentucky Eventing and Dressage Tea, and arranged a book drive for the UK Pediatric Hospital.
She plans to pursue a pre-medical track in college followed by medical school at UK.
Nathan Riffell
Nathan is a member of the varsity soccer and ultimate frisbee teams, and the National Junior Honor Society. He is part of the Wilmore Free Methodist Church quizzing team, a two-time individual national champion, a nursery volunteer, a leader-in-training for summer camp, an active participant in the church youth group, and a volunteer at the local veterans center through the church youth group.
