Wilmore Farmers’ Market returns for another season

Saturday was a perfect day to open the Wilmore Farmers’ Market.
It just wasn’t the “normal” opening day.
Market Vice President Mark Reinhardt said they weren’t sure whether anyone would show up, given the coronavirus and social distancing guidelines.
Opening day brought seven vendors and a good crowd of shoppers, he said, and a new organization to the market.
“This year we had an entry and exit marked and only one way in,” he said. “We placed vendors about 10 feet apart so we could walk around our booths and not be in contact.”
Families were also limited to one representative, he said.
The market also hired a person for traffic control, to make sure directions were followed and to form a properly-spaced line if the market got too crowded, he said.
The market set up a handwashing station, and only used cash, which has not been in circulation for some time, he said.
The market established a you-touch-it, you-buy-it policy to avoid spreading the virus.
With the new logistics, everything functioned well, he said.
“It was a great day,” he said. “Everyone behaved. A couple of people would start to go the wrong way, but we had a good person directing traffic.”
The market will be open every Saturday through October from 8 a.m. to noon.
Saturday’s vendors brought a variety of spring vegetables including lettuce, some winter vegetables like squash and sweet potatoes, along with several types of tomato and pepper plants, and honey from Garrard County, he said.
