In just a month, Asbury University’s Surrendered Class of 2023 will arrive on campus, and Asbury faculty and staff are getting excited to meet new students.
Welcome Week is scheduled for Aug. 13 – 18, and is packed with activities and information sessions that will help new students get accustomed to life at Asbury and feel comfortable at their new home away from home.
Asbury’s Welcome Week is a family affair. Faculty, staff and current students do their best to make the transition into college life as smooth as possible for new students each August. Seminars cover topics such as liberal arts learning, community and campus resources. Daily devotion times ensure students acclimate to campus spiritual life activities from their very first day on campus.
The week ends in a celebratory night of delicious desserts and community time on Friday evening before the rest of the traditional undergraduate student population returns to campus for the Welcome Back Bash on Saturday night.
According to Director of Student Engagement Heather Tyner, Welcome Week activities help prepare students academically, socially and spiritually for their four years on campus.
“Welcome Week prepares students academically through our Liberal Arts Seminar and Academic Orientation and advising session, socially through our activities and TAG groups, and spiritually through our Community Worship and hall devotions in the morning,” Tyner said. “We strive to provide students with a holistically beneficial experience that will help them flourish on our campus.”
Transition and Guidance (TAG) Groups are one of the biggest community-building aspects of Welcome Week. These groups allow students to get to know their future classmates and sophomore student leaders.
“The built-in community we provide new students through grouping them into TAG (Transition and Guidance) groups has always been the highest-ranking element of Welcome Week for new students,” Tyner said. “The variety of activities, programs and long days helps students prepare for their first college semester and beyond.”
Students can also look forward to other fun aspects of Welcome Week.
“Other aspects of Welcome Week, such as the opportunity to meet and form a relationship with their Liberal Arts Seminar professor, participating in fun activities at Asbury’s outdoor Challenge Course and meeting others in their hall, make Welcome Week both exciting and beneficial in their transition to Asbury,” Tyner said.
