Unstable economy filling stables at KyEHC: The Kentucky Equine Center, a charitable organization that takes in horses and other animals owners can no longer keep, was experiencing trouble after economic woes.

20 years ago: June 17, 1999

Gates gift helps library expand into cyberspace: Bill Gates’s The Gates Center for Technology Access provided $2 million in computers and software for Kentucky public libraries, which included Nicholasville’s Withers Memorial Public Library, which received a $15,069 grant from the Center and purchased hundreds of computers and other technology.
Churches to adopt Kosovar refugees: After the war in Kosovo, thousands of Albanian refugees were coming to America, and some were expected to be in Nicholasville in July. Three local churches offered to accept and care for refugees coming to town.
Wilmore fire chief retiring: Wilmore fire chief James Anderson, then 70, was to retire the following month.

30 years ago: June 15, 1989

Hong Kong visitor to Wilmore tells of China’s near civil war; work of Free World Radio presented: Hong Kong missionary and influential media employee Rev. Bill Ury discussed the bloody events in Tiananmen Square. On June 3, Chinese troops and tanks machine gunned opposition in the taking of Tiananmen Square. An estimated 2,600 people died, including students, workers, residents and soldiers.
Chamber organized ‘After Hours Picnic’ promotes Nicholasville park patronage: About 250 business and industry people, guests and employees had an “After Hours Picnic” June 7 at Lake Mingo Park. The purpose was to promote park patronage.
Kentucky Prep All-Star Cagers stop Junior Star Contingent at JCHS Tuesday, 129-85: Senior All-Star Cagers defeated Junior Star Contingent 129-85 in the Jessamine County High School gym Tuesday.
Board unanimously hires new school chief; Lois Adams to take over district helm July 1: With a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Jessamine County Board of Education chose Lois Carson Adams as new chief of schools.

40 years ago: June 21, 1979

Last in long line of bad-luck felines survives near fatal flattening by automobile: First grader Matthew Smith, the son of Steele and Debbie Smith, adopted a cat named Cubby Cat after a teacher gave Matthew the cat, who survived being hit by a car.
Fire volunteers save residence in country; lose small home: The Jessamine County Fire Department saved a two-story house from a fire Sunday. The Nicholasville Fire Department fought a house fire Saturday but lost that house.
Second Adcom expansion proposes tripled output, environment safety: A second expansion of nine-year-old Adcom Wire Company on Nicholasville’s west side was well underway.

50 years ago: June 19, 1969

New Baptist church building project scheduled on US 27: A $275,000 Nicholasville Baptist Church construction project located off US 27 was expected to be completed by the following week.
Edward J. Brumfield appointed UK alumni affairs director: On Tuesday, Edward Jay Brumfield was appointed director of the University of Kentucky’s alumni affairs by the university’s executive committee of the board of trustees.
Bids received by city, industry body to develop subdivision, park: City of Nicholasville and Jessamine Industrial Development Corporation officials were present at City Hall Tuesday to receive development bids for a 112-acre Edgewood Subdivision addition and 150-acre Industrial Park.
