West Jessamine Middle School student Brooklyn McAlister was recently awarded the 2019 Public Service Recognition Week Poster Contest, with WJMS student Katie Ostroske taking home third place in the competition.
Personnel Cabinet Secretary Thomas B. Stephens and Education Commissioner Wayne D. Lewis awarded first, second and third place winners in a ceremony held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington earlier this month.
First place winners were awarded $50 and a metal printing of their artwork. Second and third place winners were awarded a wooden plaque of their art and $25 for second place, and $10 for third place.
“Public service isn’t just a job, it’s a true calling, and for that we’re grateful. To see the work and dedication of civil servants through the eyes of a child is a gift for all,” Stephens said. “We are excited to honor our employees and award this talented group of students in the Commonwealth.”
Six other students from across the state took home the second and third place prizes in their respective age groups for art submissions.
“We thank the teachers, parents and family members who passionately support and encourage these students in their exploration of art,” Lewis said. “I’m proud to say we had the opportunity to have more than 1,200 students representing 100 schools enter. Congratulations to our winners!”
