From staff reports

The checkered flag drops Saturday for the Jim Edd Shearer Memorial Coaster Car Derby.
This is the fifth year for the event, sponsored by the City of Wilmore and the Wilmore Community Development Board.
The derby is named in memory of Jim Edd Shearer, a local businessman and sports enthusiast who generously helped with the sponsorships at the start-up of the annual event.
Once again, The Family Center will provide pre-race STEM activities from 10 a.m. to noon before the Wilmore Coaster Car Race.
This year’s hands-on learning fun will be provided by the UK Solar Car Team.  For only $5 per family, residents can enjoy hands-on learning fun, meet the team of engineers and see the UK solar car. The Family Center is located just feet from the Wilmore Coaster Car Derby at 334 East Main street.
Registration and safety checks start at 11 a.m. with races taking place at 1 p.m. on East Main Street.
Participants, ages 7 to 17, will take a ride down the hill of East Main Street which will be closed to other traffic.
Participants will receive a free event T-shirt, and trophies will be awarded for first-, second- and third-places.
This is a free event, thanks to local sponsorships.
The registration form and participation waiver form can be downloaded from www.wilmore.org or picked up at Wilmore City Hall.
