Colts wrangle McCreary for trip to Rupp: The West Jessamine High School Colts punched their ticket for a trip to Rupp Arena and the Sweet Sixteen. The colts got 18 points from junior guard Jarrod Polson and held on at Lincoln County to defeat McCreary Central, 47-42.
City officials scratching heads over benefits of LAMPO: For years, Jessamine leaders have been frustrated over what they perceive as a lack of effectiveness from being associated with the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. State Rep. Bob Damron, who represents Jessamine County and a small portion of Fayette County, said that much of the decision making has favored Lexington, while Nicholasville has been snubbed time and time again.

20-years-ago: March 11, 1999

U.S. 27 study presented to local planners: Land along northern US 27 would be heavily developed with few usage restrictions under a plan presented to local officials at a joint meeting of the Nicholasville and Jessamine County/Wilmore planning commissions. Consultants recommended changes to the city and county comprehensive plans and zoning ordinances to accomplish the goals of the U.S. 27 North Corridor Access Management Plan.
Wilmore procures $1 mil for water plant: Wilmore’s water treatment plant will get much needed improvements, thanks to a $1 million grant awarded to the city two-weeks ago.
Wilmore council debates Y2K: The Wilmore City Council was divided Monday over how much money to spend for the city’s Y2K computer system upgrades. The council, which met without Mayor Harold Rainwater, who is recovering from a February horse accident, talked for nearly two hours on how much to spend on improvements.
Wilmore kids serious about chess: Wilmore Elementary’s Chess Club was formed in January of this year. The club is the first of its kind at the school, and in the county.

30-years-ago: March 16, 1989

New jail nearly full; state pays county $16 per day for confinement of felons: “I wish they had built a third floor on the jail,” declared Jailer Tommy Bruner after the new detention center at 229 E. Maple St. began filling up. “I don’t think there will be any problem keeping it full.” With exception of juvenile quarters, the new $2 million county jail was one shy of capacity.
Runabout boat torn up Saturday at Lock 9; Two rescued: The runabout ran over Lock 9 and toppled into the lower river level around 2 p.m. The boat was pulled under and all three occupants were tossed into the river.
Cause of March 9 bus fire attributed to valve problems in carburetor of vehicle: Investigation into the remains of a Jessamine County school bus revealed flooding of the carburetor with gasoline probably caused the flames which destroyed the vehicle.

40-years-ago: March 15, 1979

Wilmore water systems will expand to Jessamine Station road house: Wilmore council voted to supply water outside city limits to an area of Jessamine Station Road that includes some residents now and is expected to grow in the future.
Barn fire under arson investigation: The owner of a barn which burnt, Josh Galvin, has reported the fire to arson investigators. The large nine-bent barn burned to the ground Friday morning. Jessamine County Fire Chief Stanley Gillispie said the fire was reported around 2:50 a.m.
Engineers making inventory of Jessamine County bridges: Watkins and Associate engineers are making an inventory of the condition and description of some 22 bridges in Jessamine County. The engineers will be taking photo graphs, measuring and figuring capacity of bridges on roads which are not state maintained.
New hospital specialty division of AAV companies to open here by May: Nicholasville is the site for a new manufacturing plant. The industry will function as a hospital specialty division engaged in production of disposable consumer goods. Construction is now underway to supplement an existing 200 x 25-foot production and warehouse building with a two-story brick office-business machine cafeteria addition.

50-years-ago: March 13, 1969

Pistol seized from student’s locker: A pistol was removed from the wall locker of a Jessamine County High School senior girl from Wilmore Feb. 26 during school following isolated cases of racial uneasiness.
Chamber donates $250 Tuesday for teen center development: Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce members met at Sandman restaurant and voted to donate $250 to the Nicholasville Teen Center. The funds will be used for improvements and additions at the North Main Street recreational site.
Proposal brought before fiscal court: A proposal on the numerical distribution of a joint city county planning commission was presented to fiscal court Thursday by Muin Kalla, professional planner from the Kentucky Program Development Office. He suggested representation be distributed with six from the county, four from Nicholasville and two from Wilmore.
Mayor Grow resigns alcoholic beverage administrator’s post: Nicholasville City Council met Monday evening in City Hall and accepted the resignation of Mayor Woodford Grow as alcoholic beverage administrator.
