Jessamine Career and Technology Center’s Family and Consumer Science Program recently held its National Family and Consumer Science Day and will host a regional STAR event at West Jessamine High School next month.

“We are proud to have one Family, Career and Community Leaders of America state officer and two FCCLA regional officers this year” Jennifer Hulette from JCTC said. “Hannah Kimmel is serving as our state vice president of peer education. Connor Stutsman is serving as our regional vice president of competitive events, and Lauren Baker is serving as our regional vice president of public relations.”

In addition to next month’s event, JCTC’s FCCLA group will host a week-long event in February and a state leadership conference in March.

“FCCLA is a national career and technical student organization for students through 12-grade.” Hulette said. “FCCLA is the only national Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers, and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.”

The pathways program offered by JCTC includes fashion and interior design, early childhood education, consumer and family management, culinary and food services, fundamentals of teaching food science and dietetics hospitality, travel, tourism, and recreation school-based enterprises. Courses also include early childhood education, JCTC playschool fashion and interior design, JCTC embroidery and vinyl creations, culinary and food services and Crump’s Catering at East Jessamine High School.

“Our department offers several industry certifications that prepare students for the workplace,” Hulette said. “For instance, early childhood education students are eligible to receive a CDA (Child Development Associate) credential while in high school. This not only prepares them for work, but also equates to nine college credit hours. Students in culinary and food services have the opportunity to earn a ProStart industry certificate sponsored by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.”

With the event in January quickly approaching, Hulette said FCCLA needs residents in the community to help judge.

“The STAR events competition at WJHS is Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019,” Hulette said. “We are in need of people in the community who will be willing to serve as judges that day. Please contact Melanie Ard at WJHS if you are willing to serve as a judge.”
