The holidays are now amongst us. As we all run around in our busy every-day lives trying to get all we need done before Christmas eve, there are many local events to help us celebrate this season when we actually take the time to stop and enjoy.

This Friday, the Jessamine County tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. on the court house lawn. The annual event will help set off the festivities here in the county complete with Christmas carols for all who attend to enjoy. There will also be a photo opportunity, free of charge, with Santa for children. Complimentary refreshments are also available. Updates for this event can be seen on the Jessamine County, Kentucky Facebook page.

After everyone takes in the sights of the Christmas tree lighting Friday evening, Wilmore’s 30th anniversary of its Old-Fashioned Musical Christmas will take place Saturday, Dec. 1, with events starting at 7 a.m. as the Lions Club offers a pancake breakfast at Wesley village until 10 a.m. Other events include a model train display at Wesley Village from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; kids craft time with Mrs. Claus at the GCF Basement from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; three different craft fairs located at the Asbury Seminary Gym, Christmas Holiday Market at Mt. Freedom Baptist Church and Holiday Vendor Craft Fair at Wilmore Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Cocoa and cookies with Mrs. Claus at Bethel Pointe from 4 to 5 p.m.; AdventureServe Ministries Beans and Rice Fundraiser Dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the Wilmore Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Wilmore United Methodist Church parking lot on Main Street at 5:30 p.m. Downtown shops will also be open for Christmas shopping throughout the day. Live music will also be performed throughout the event with a grand finale by the All-Town Choir and Salvation Army Student Fellowship at Wilmore United Methodist Church at 8 p.m. Updates for this event can be viewed on the City of Wilmore Facebook page.

If that wasn’t enough, the fifth annual St. Nich Festival will take place next weekend, Dec. 8, with events scheduled all day long. A Pancake Breakfast with Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place at the Catalyst Church, located at 101 N. First St. from 8 a.m. to noon. Other popular events include the St. Nich Christmas Trolley which will run through downtown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; an Ugly Sweater 5K run will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Coolidge building, located at 499 E. Maple St. with the St. Nich Christmas parade taking place at 5:30 p.m. as Main Street in Nicholasville is blocked off from Lake Street to Kroger’s. For a full list of events, see the special St. Nich Festival section in today’s newspaper.

However you enjoy your holiday season this year, I hope that everyone will stop running and enjoy at least one of these special events this town has to offer. Merry Christmas!
