The Jessamine County Public Library is hosting its third annual Comic Surge Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Community Relations and Marketing Coordinator Kelly Little said Comic Surge is a free and family-friendly comic convention open to all ages.

“People can meet characters from their favorite comics and movies, take advantage of great photo ops and participate in a cosplay contest with prizes for kids, teens and adults,” Little said. “We will have authors, artists and vendors selling comic and fandom related wares.”

Little also said the wide variety of activities will provide something for everyone. Comic Surge, she said, is the second largest event JCPL offers each year — behind the Summer Learning Preview Party in May.

“I think some people enjoy dressing up in cosplay while others come to see those dressed up,” Little said. “The kids will enjoy the costumed characters and the crafts. Adults and teens will enjoy the vendors and artists booths.”

According to Little, part of JCPL’s mission is to enrich the community with cultural opportunities.

“This event is a unique opportunity for our community and we hope to bring new people into the library by offering something different,” Little said. “It’s also a chance to remind people libraries aren’t just books or movies anymore, we have so much more to offer.”

Last year, Little said more than 3,100 people passed through the JCPL doors for Comic Surge. But attendance, she said, only tells part of the story.

“What means more to me is people talk about this event throughout the year,” Little said. “We get questions about it on our social media, and last year we even had a young lady contact us about the date because she was planning her wedding and wanted to make sure she didn’t plan it on the same date as Comic Surge.”

The event, Little said, is all about creativity and imagination.

“I really look forward to seeing what creative cosplay costumes people wear,” Little said. “I also like walking about and seeing the unique things the vendors, artists and authors have for sale.”
