Fall festivities this weekend

Published 2:44 pm Thursday, October 4, 2018

Every year as fall approaches I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes, by one of my favorite authors, written in one of my favorite books.

In “The Great Gatsby,” F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

As the leaves change, the weather cools and we are once again reminded that another year is quickly approaching, I often sit and think how right that statement is.

As I look forward to apple cider, pumpkins, candy apples, fireplaces crackling and the cool fall breeze, I know I can’t be alone in anxiously awaiting those hibernating months of winter that is quickly approaching us all.

Nothing makes it feel more like fall then community events that are sure to get you in the spirit. Last weekend, Nicholasville held its Fall Festival at the City-County Park. Make sure and check out page nine for photos. This weekend, events will take place in both Nicholasville and Wilmore that are sure to get both residents and those passing through in the fall spirit.

This Saturday, the Nicholasville Fire Department will be hosting its Fire Prevention Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at 1022 S. Main St. behind station two in the parking lot of Lockmasters. The event will feature all too important fire prevention information, but also offer those who attend the chance to meet Sparky the fire dog, a chance to tour the fire trucks, bounce houses, a fire safety house, a children’s firefighter challenge course and even a cookout with local firemen. Those who show up will also have the opportunity to dunk the fire chiefs in the dunking booth for $1 for three balls. If the weather does not corporate, the rain date for this event has been scheduled for Oct. 13.

Wilmore will also host its Arts and Crafts festival this weekend as well. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on East Main Street with approximately 53 vendors lining the street showcasing their handcrafted work.  Those who attend will also get the opportunity to listen to a variety of live music which starts at 10 a.m. and lasts throughout the day near the rail tracks.  The Farmer’s Market and the Caboose Railside Museum will be open, as well as East Main Street merchants. Children can also enjoy free horse rides on the nearby Downtown Green between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., a service provided by the Asbury University Equine Center. The rain venue for this event has been announced at the Providence School at 210 S. Lexington Ave.

It won’t be long, and we will all be counting down the days to Christmas. That is if you are not already. But before that happens, I intend to slowly take in all the community events and enjoy the weather cooling off and all the festivals Jessamine County has to offer – and I hope to see you out this weekend at one of the events.
