Asbury University Equine Center is known as one of the nation’s finest and was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from USA Equine Trust.

“This is our first time at Asbury Equine to receive a grant from USA Equestrian Trust,” equestrian director and professor Harold Rainwater said. “We are very honored to be selected to receive this award.”

The USA Equestrian Trust, a “private foundation dedicated to furthering the rich legacy of horses and equestrian sport,” was originally founded in 1917 as the American Horse Show Association.

USA Equine Trust awarded four equine centered non-profits with nearly $40,000.

Asbury will use $1,500 of the $5,000 to fund three scholarship awards for senior students in the university’s police mount program. This program trains horses to serve with police, in the military and with national park rangers across the nation.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship opportunity, Rainwater said students will be notified and asked to apply to be considered.

Asbury is the only American university which offers a police horse training program administered by its students. The program was formed in 2001 when Asbury students started training Percheron Thoroughbred crossed horses as police mounts through participation with the National Police Horse Colloquium at the Kentucky Horse Park.
