Fourth-grade classes from Wilmore Elementary will participate in an Arbor Day event hosted by AdventureServe Ministries and the City of Wilmore later this month.

Scheduled from 12:40 to 2:30 p.m. April 25, the event will take place on the AdventureServe property, located at 50 Campground Lane, and is open to the public.

More than 100 students will gather to participate in environmentally-themed activities and rotate through four stations designed to teach them about nature.

“Students will learn the importance of caring for the world around them in a fun and interactive way,” Kayla Lutes, public relations manager for AdventureServe said. “The environment belongs to each of us, but perhaps it belongs more to our children. This event will engage them in ‘creation care’ by sending each student home with their own tree to plant.”

AdventureServe is a non-denominational, non-profit organization serving  local communities by providing Christian wilderness and mission experiences for church groups.

AdventureServe Ministries Executive Director Andy Bathje said the Arbor Day celebration represents the ministry’s mission and desire to be a “park” to the community during daylight hours.

“We have trees on this property that are more than 100 years old,” Bathje said. “We want to keep adding to that because the trees we have are markers for so many people’s memories on this property where God has ministered to them.”

The stations during the event will include a focus on bee pollination, trees, water, wildlife, fossils and rocks. Students will engage in games, crafts and storytelling to further explore these topics. The event will also include a group planting of a buckeye tree.

“Families with small children can attend and participate in the hands-on learning activities that will be led by volunteers,” Lutes said. “The event as a whole presents an opportunity for anyone to learn more about the environment and how to care for it. This event aligns with our mission of encouraging growth through confrontational experiences with God, self, others and nature. We want the community to be aware of our missions and wilderness programs for groups, high school apprenticeship program, fall adventure club for local kids, and retreat facilities.”
