A Nicholasville teen was arraigned on Friday by a grand jury for killing an East Jessamine High School student at the beginning of this year.

Tyler Jeffers, 18, was indicted on Wednesday, March 22 on a murder charge for the shooting death of Leo Travers, 15, of Nicholasville. He was also indicted on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment after some of the gunfire shattered the back window of a car driven by a woman who dropped Travers and another juvenile off.

On Friday, Jeffers was formally informed of other charges in the indictment, including criminal attempt to sell a controlled substance to a minor with a firearm, tampering with physical evidence and receiving stolen property.

The gun allegedly used in the shooting is reported to have been stolen, according to Nicholasville Police.

Jeffers’s grandfather, Albert McKinney, 66, of Nicholasville, was also indicted on Wednesday on a charge of tampering with physical evidence after he moved the weapon into a tote in the garage while police officers were searching for it, according to the arrest record.

Jeffers shot Travers on Jan. 12 at Garden Park Drive after a planned marijuana transaction went awry, according to the Nicholasville Police.

Travers was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Jessamine RJ Corman Ambulatory Care Center that same night.

Now, Jeffers is awaiting his next court date on Friday, April 14th, the same day McKinney is scheduled to be arraigned.
