A local elementary school chorus sang for a crowd that filled Rupp Arena for the Harlem Globetrotter game on Monday night in Lexington.

The Eagle Chorus from Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary in Nicholasville is led by Amy Harrod, RDES music specialist.

The Globetrotters have always reached out to get a local choir to sing the national anthem before their game, Harrod said.

“They contacted us before Thanksgiving to sing before their game and I accepted the offer,” she said, “We advertised that we were singing at the game in the first part of December. Then we started selling tickets to Rosenwald students and families.”

In previous years, Harrod has tried to plan for the chorus to sing at various events. Last year the students sang the National Anthem at a Lexington Legends game.

“I told my students I have never sung on the Rupp Arena Floor,” Harrod said. “I told them I was excited about this opportunity for them and I knew this was an opportunity for them that was going to last a lifetime and it may be something they will never get to do again.”

Around 400 Rosenwald-Dunbar students, staff and family members were in attendance at the game to watch the Eagle Chorus sing the National Anthem.

Superintendent Kathy Fields was among the crowd of 4,000 onlookers.

“I was so proud of our Rosenwald-Dunbar Eagles Choir and Amy Harrod,” Fields said. “Our students did a great job.”

Harrod said though the students were nervous, they still performed great.

“I was so proud of them and how they represented Rosenwald and Jessamine County,” Harrod said.
