Colts kick Mercer for return trip to Rupp Arena

West Jessamine’s Kyle Mefford yelled to his teammates that they were having a movie night after the game Tuesday.

Chances are, Mefford and the rest of the Colts are fans of sequels.

West defended its 12th Region championship and recaptured a bid to the PNC/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen tournament after defeating Mercer County 51-48 at Pulaski County.

“It’s good to know they have the experience,” West Coach Damon Kelley said. “When we walk in there next week it’s not going to be brand new to any of them. They’re going to know what it’s about, and that’s huge because the first game there for a new team can cause a lot of jitters.”

Last season, the Colts surprised most of the state with a final-four run in the Sweet Sixteen. West fell to Louisville Central, 52-48.

“We have more experience this year,” senior forward David Elliott said. “The first game won’t be as nerve-racking for us.”

Elliott admitted the prior experience is a double-edge sword, as no one will be surprised this time around.

“People are going to prepare for us more, so we’re going to prepare for everyone else more,” he said. “We’re going to come out ready just like everyone else.”

And the first match-up for the Colts will be Muhlenberg County. The Mustangs are 20-10 on the season and dispatched Apollo 64-50 in the 3rd Region final.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Kelley said. “Muhlenberg County is a very talented basketball team. I had a chance to watch them over Christmas; we’re going to have our hands full, (but) I’ll go to bat with my kids against anybody.”

The Colts and Mustangs are set to meet Thursday, March 18 at noon at Rupp Arena.
