Master Kermit Shaffer will be offering a Tai Chi class at the Jessamine County YMCA starting in January. Master Shaffer is a 6th-degree black belt and has been studying with Grandmaster Hiang The since 1973 with special emphasis on internal studies and training. Tai Chi is a classic meditative art that combines slow movements with special breathing techniques to improve overall health as well as manage stress, increase strength, and improve balance and flexibility. Using the Lee Family Tai Chi form results in a mental and physical revitalization — a calming and an increased awareness — and improvement in spirit, mind and body, including the core postural muscles. Tai Chi practice has been recommended by the National Arthritis Foundation. Previous martial arts experience is not required for this class. Positions can be modified to suit just about any fitness level. The emphasis is on doing the best that you can at your current fitness level and showing gradual improvement throughout the course, not on executing each move perfectly. More information can be obtained by calling the Jessamine County YMCA at 885-5013 or at http://ymcaofcentralky.org/ branches/jessamine-county-ymca. Are you part of a neighborhood association?
