Board to consider school-calendar revisions
March 5, 2010
The Jessamine County Board of Education has called a special meeting for Monday, March 8 at 7:35 p.m. The board will be considering changes to the school calendar after inclement weather has wreaked havoc on the district's schedule.
The calendar initially included eight make-up days. The district has used all eight to make up for days missed because of snow, which put the last day of school on June 3, one day before graduations are scheduled for the afternoon and evening of Friday, June 4.
But officials found out in February that the district would not be allowed to use one of its make-up days. March 19 is scheduled as the Central Kentucky Education Association’s annual District Day — a day when the Kentucky Education Association holds regional meetings.
Superintendent Lu Youg said if CKEA requests a day off, it must be a non-instructional day. Neither the commissioner nor CKEA have the authority to grant permission to hold school on that day, so Jessamine County schools will not be session.
The board will consider adding an early-release day on June 4 to make up for being out of session on March 19. Despite replacing a full day with an early-release day, the district would still meet the day and hour requirements for instructional time, Young said.
The district did not put CKEA’s District Day in the make-up rotation for the 2010-2011 school year.
