The next time the East and West Jessamine basketball teams met, it will be the for the last time this season.
The 46th district pairings have been announced and for the first time, the Colts and Jaguars will meet in the first round.
The teams moved into the 46th district prior to the 2005-2006 season. Since then, the East and West boys team have met in the district championship game every year. That four-year streak ends Tuesday when the Colts and Jaguars meet in the opening round. Winner returns to the title game, loser goes home.
The Colts won all three meetings between the two teams this season, though the gap has closed each time. The Colts drew first blood with a 84-67 win at home in the championship game of the Jessamine Invitational.
The second meeting came Jan. 8 in at East where West walked away with a 88-81 victory. Less than a month later, this time at West again, the Jaguars fell 74-71.
The girls’ teams have never met in the 46th District Tournament. While the Jaguars laid claim to the district title two years ago, the Colts have not been past the first round since defeating Harrodsburg in 2006. They have never been to a 46th district title game.
Much like the boys’ series, one side has dominated the rivalry this season.
The East girls won both meetings between the two teams, but the Colts have also closed the distance with each subsequent meeting.
The Jaguars were victorious at home, 52-43 and again on the road Feb. 5 with a 50-59 win over the Colts.
But as West girls’ Coach Troy Thomas said, “Those are just scrimmages.”
These games count. So while we won’t be seeing a rivalry game for a district title for either boys or girls’ hoops and while we won’t see a possible fifth matchup between the boys’ teams, we will see the flame of the cross-town rivalry burn bright thanks to an early elimination game next week.
Winner advances; loser waits until next year.
The East and West boys’ teams will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday with Mercer County and Burgin facing off at 7:45 p.m.
The winners meet Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at East in the championship game.
Monday, the East and West girls’ teams face off at East at 6 p.m. Mercer County and Burgin follow at 7:45 p.m.
The title game will be held Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
Both participants in the title game move on to the 12th region tournament.
