Radon: Tasteless, odorless and deadly

news@jessaminejournal.com
January 20, 2010

You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it. Radon is a radioactive, cancer-causing gas from the soil that may be creeping into your home.

Through decay, radon breaks down into hazardous particles that can be trapped in your house and inhaled. Radon enters a home through cracks in basements, crawlspaces, construction joints and the water supply.

Due to Jessamine County’s geology of sinkholes, underground streams, and caves, radon can easily move about and cause higher than average radon levels.

Radon is considered a health hazard. The U.S. Surgeon General warns that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, your risk of lung cancer is especially high.

The only way to know if radon levels in your home are higher than recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to test your home for radon. The Health Department offers free Radon test kits that only take one week.

Call 859-885-2310, or come by the Jessamine County Health Department Environmental Office to receive radon information and your free Radon test kit.
