County library receives $21,940 in federal grants

The Jessamine County Public Library is the recipient of a $13,330 programming grant and an $8,610 equipment grant.

The projects are made possible by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA).

Programming grants promote and support quality programs in Kentucky’s public libraries. Equipment grants provide funding to replace, upgrade or add new equipment in order to improve patron access to information and resources or enhance library services.

KDLA received 26 programming grant applications, awarding 10 for a total of $55,850. Ten out of 23 applicants received an equipment grant for a total of $72,537.

With the programming grant the library will offer “Work Launch @ JCPL.” The library will partner with the Kentucky Works Program to provide job-search training to the residents of Jessamine County through workshops on the basics of resume and cover-letter writing, online job searches, and online application submission. Funds will be used to purchase equipment, software, supplies and publicity.

“Through programming, libraries can provide information in a dynamic and creative fashion,” said State Librarian and KDLA Commissioner Wayne Onkst. “Programming has become such an important component of public library service in recent years, we are happy to be able to provide additional resources for this purpose.”

The library will use the equipment grant to replace an outdated and failing microfilm reader/printer to improve patron access to local history and genealogical materials, and to conduct research using microfilm resources from other states. Funds will provide equipment, supplies and training.

KDLA provides equitable access to quality library and information resources, as well as helps public agencies ensure that legislatively mandated documentation of government programs is created, efficiently managed and made accessible. For more information on KDLA resources, programs and services, visit www.kdla.ky.gov or call 502-564-8300 ext. 315.
