West grad receives FFA degree recognizing leadership, achievement
Jeff Fristoe, a graduate of West Jessamine High School and current student at the Univer-sity of Northwestern Ohio, was awarded the American FFA Degree at the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis on Oct. 24.
The degree is given to those who demonstrate leadership abilities and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing and service programs.

2010 Rogers Scholars applications available
Jessamine County high schoolers are now able to apply for the 2010 summer sessions of the Rogers Scholars and Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute (ELI) youth programs sponsored and hosted by The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
The Rogers Scholars program is a one-week summer session for rising high school juniors in The Center’s primary 42-county service area that emphasizes developing technological skills, leadership, an entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to rural Kentucky. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply for scholarships from 13 participating Kentucky colleges and universities. The 2010 sessions are scheduled for June 27-July 2 and July 11-16.
The ELI program is a one-week summer session for current freshmen, sophomores and juniors that promotes creativity and teamwork and helps build business and leadership skills. Members of ELI’s first-place business concept team are eligible for a Presidential Scholarship to Eastern Kentucky University. The 2010 ELI session is scheduled for June 13-18.
Applications for both programs can be found via the center’s Web site at www.centertech.com.
The deadline for application is Jan. 31, 2010.
West band places fifth in state
The West Jessamine High marching band went to the semifinals of the KMEA state competition Saturday at South Oldham and finished in fifth place. The top four bands advanced to the finals in the evening at Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium. West finished nine hundredths of a point behind fourth place.
WJHS band to sponsor craft fair
The West Jessamine High marching band is sponsoring its second Holiday Craft Fair at the school on Saturday, Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Vendors can pay $25 for a space, and Santa will be there for pictures with kids and pets for $5 each. Vendors who are interested can contact Toni Holland at 887-2925 or kentuckygurl6916@aol.com.
