BOE receives project updates

The Jessamine County Board of Education heard updates on two school-construction projects Monday night at its work session and board meeting.

Although the new East Jessamine Middle School is complete and school is in session, some minor details need to be fixed, and construction is progressing well at the site of the new Early Learning Village.

Charlie Barnhart of the architect firm Sherman Carter Barnhart said East Middle had some roofing issues and a missing canopy and that there was still some work to do on the trim, but he said those projects should be completed within four or five weeks.

The only project that will have to wait until school is out of session is the replacement of the windows in the gymnasium, which were framed incorrectly, Barnhart said.

The 2,800-foot connector road between East Middle and East High, which Sherman Carter Barnhart is also responsible for, is currently under-budget and should be finished by Nov. 15, Barnhart said.

Margie Jacobs of Tate Hill Jacobs updated the board on construction progress at the site of the new Early Learning Village, which is scheduled to be completed for the beginning of the ‘10-’11 school year.

Jacobs said new cuts have been made in the exterior walls for new windows and doors, and asphalt installation on the new south parking lot is under way.

“The work that’s going on is great,” Jacobs said. “I think they’ve got good quality control going on over there. The unfortunate news is they are two weeks behind.”

Jacobs said the delay was due to the complexities of installing under-slab plumbing.

Board Chairman Karl Smith asked Jacobs if weather-related issues could slow down the project any more. Jacobs said the construction workers should be able to work, rain or shine.

“It’s within their control,” Jacobs said. “If they’ve got a hole in the building, they’ve got the control to go cover it up.”

Jacobs said the current timeline benchmark is to be finished with the new walls and more than halfway finished with above-ceiling work by January 2010.
