West wins second annual ‘Rivals with a Cause’ game

The East and West Jessamine girls’ soccer teams may have started out wearing pink jerseys to mark their Rivals with a Cause game Monday night. By the end of the night, most of them were brown.
In a rain-soaked and muddy game, the Colts shutout their rivals, 3-0 at home.
Despite the wet track negating either team’s speed and causing havoc for defensive players, the play wasn’t entirely sloppy. Courtney Peavler put a shot into the back of the net in the 28th minute, to give the Colts the advantage in a tightly contested first half.
“I thought, in the first half, we played well,” East Coach DeAngelo Wiser said. “We hung in there. We gave ourselves an opportunity to get back in the game. The effort on our part was tremendous considering West has so many weapons.”
West went on to add a pair of insurance goals in the second half off the foot of Arin Gilliland. Teryn Wright assisted on the first for her second assist of the game and Maddie Lockridge earned the assist on the game’s final goal.
Despite the margin of victory, Wiser sees a marked improvement in his club in just one year. Last year, the Jaguars fell 5-0 on their home field to their rivals.
“If you think back on last year’s game, it probably could have been 9-0 or 10-0, but (tonight) I didn’t see any quit in our kids,” Wiser said. “I think what we built before this game has helped us. And we understand the level of play has to be higher. So we’ll take this game and use it as a learning tool to get ready for district play.”
The win for West leaves the Colts and Lexington Catholic undefeated in district play. Setting up a potentially huge game late in the season.
“Looks like it’s going to come down to us and Catholic here on senior night,” West Coach Kevin Wright said. “It’s going to be wild. It might come down to goal differential or whatever. It’s a tough district.”
The win was West’s seventh straight. After losing the first game of the month to Henry Clay, the Colts have been unbeaten in September. Though playing on a drenched pitch was learning experience for the young club.
“I told the girls we were going to have a real hard time trying to be fine with people falling down,” Wright said. “A lot of times you can get all kinds of crazy goals in this kind of weather. I told our kids in the back to be careful and not to be too fine. I thought we did a pretty good job on this track.”
More important, though, was the teams’ combined effort to raise money for the fight against cancer.
“That’s what this game is all about,” Wiser said. “Giving back to those who are fighting bigger challenges than winning soccer games. I’m really proud of the combination of parents on both sides of the aisle, kinda putting aside their differences a little and for something a bit bigger and better.”
“This is the best thing we do,” Wright said. “It’s a good thing. Pull together with two schools and help others. I try to preach to my kinds, “It’s not about us. It’s about others. To serve. Do things for other people. It makes a difference.’”
Lu Young and West Principal Ed Jones delivered the game ball via an R.J. Corman helicopter before the game.
The contest was played with pink soccer balls. Silent auctions were held and funds were raised at the schools throughout the year before the game.
“I love the game,” Wright said. “Wiser and I are good friends. It’s just a good thing for our community and it kind pulls you together and gets you thinking about other people.”
In the future, as the schools’ fund-raising efforts grow, Wiser, in his second season as East coach, would like to see the rivalry grow as well.
“From a personal standpoint, we want the rivalry to be tighter and more balanced,” he said. “I think we’re getting there. I think it’s going to continue to get tighter and tighter. We’re going to do everything we can to make it that way.”
West stayed home last night to take on Lafayette (1-10-2). Results were not available by press time.
The Colts then travel to Bowling Green Saturday. East is in the midst of a long road swing. The Jags travel to Mercer County tonight at 7.
