Scott C. Schurz Jr. was named publisher of The Jessamine Journal in Nicholasville, Ky., in August 2007, eight months after he assumed responsibility for all Schurz properties in Central Kentucky. Along with the Nicholasville newspaper, those properties include another weekly, The Interior Journal of Stanford and two dailies, The Advocate-Messenger of Danville and The Winchester Sun. Schurz held his first position in central Kentucky at The Advocate-Messenger as assistant publisher in January, 2005. Schurz serves on the Danville Library Inc. board, the Heart of Kentucky United Way board and the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Committee. He also is a member of the board of directors of the Kentucky Press Association, the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association board and the Inland Press Foundation Family Owners Committee. His corporate responsibilities include the Schurz Communications, Inc. (SCI) board of directors, the SCI Acquisition Committee, the SCI Governance Committee, the SCI Audit Committee and the SCI Strategic Planning Task Force, of which he has served as chairman. Schurz is president and director of Advocate Communications Inc., a subsidiary of SCI, and vice president and officer of the Advocate Brass Band. He is a graduate of the 2006-2007 class of Leadership Boyle County. Schurz was born in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 1, 1969. He holds both a Bachelor of Arts (1991) and a Master of Business Administration (2004) from the University of Notre Dame. Schurz and his wife Stephanie have two children, Scott "Trey" III, 6, and Daniel, 4. |

MIKE MOORE |
Mike Moore, Editor Mike Moore was named editor of The Jessamine Journal in December 2005. He began his newspaper career as staff writer covering news for the Phenix Citizen in Phenix City, Alabama, before moving to Corbin, Kentucky, where he served as sports writer and then sports editor at the Times-Tribune. He also spent some time in Pikeville, Kentucky, as the editor of the Appalachian News-Express. His primary beat is the city of Nicholasville. Moore has garnered several awards through the Mississippi and Kentucky Press Assocations during his career. He is a member of the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors and also a graduate of Leadership Jessamine County and the Nicholasville Police Department's Citizens Police Academy. Prior to his newspaper career, Moore spent six years in the United States Air Force and four years in the Air Force Reserve. During his time in the Air Force he was stationed in Turkey, Texas, Mississippi and Florida. He is a graduate of Pine Forest Senior High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Science in Communication with an emphasis in broadcasting from Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. He and his wife Anne reside in Nicholasville. |
AMANDA BAUMFELD |
Amanda Baumfeld, Reporter Amanda Baumfeld comes to The Journal from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune in West Covina, Calif. Baumfeld received her bachelor’s degree from Medaille College in Buffalo, N.Y. After covering a local board of education for a weekly paper and serving as an assignment editor for an NBC station in Buffalo, she moved across the nation to California. She reported for the Orange County Register for two years before her two years in West Covina. Her duties include covering the Jessamine County Fiscal Court, the city of Wilmore and Nicholasville Planning and Zoning. Baumfeld and her husband, Micah, live in Lexington |
JONATHAN KLEPPINGER |
Jonathan Kleppinger, Reporter Jonathan Kleppinger has been with The Jessamine Journal since October 2009. He writes news and feature stories and covers the Jessamine County Board of Education. He is originally from Berea but currently lives in Richmond, where he is attending Eastern Kentucky University and is on track to graduate in May 2010 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. At EKU’s school paper, the Eastern Progress, he has worked as a photographer, columnist, news writer and copy editor. Jonathan and his wife, Courtney, reside in Richmond. |

Jonathan Stark, Sports Editor Jonathan Stark has been the sports editor at The Jessamine Journal since August 2010. He is a 2009 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in computer electronic publishing. Stark was previously the sports editor at The Leader-Union in Vandalia, Ill. While at EKU, he worked for the school newspaper, The Eastern Progress. Stark is a native of Louisville and now resides in Lexington. |
SHANE WALTERS |
Shane Walters, News Designer Shane Walters has been with The Jessamine Journal
since May 2007. As news designer, Walters' primary job is the overall
look and design of The Journal's News, Neighbors and special sections.
His duties include copy editing, creating headlines, graphics, photo
illustrations and other graphical elements which appeal to the readership
of The Journal. His secondary duties include occasional writing
and photography and shooting and editing video for The Journal's
Web site. Walters also acts as The Journal's webmaster by maintaining
the publication's Web site, which includes posting stories, photographs
and other updates. Walters received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism
and Graphic Communications from Eastern Kentucky University
in 2006. Shane and his wife, April, have one son, Jack. |

Mandy Sallee, Regional Advertising Manager Mandy Sallee is a graduate of Jessamine County High School and the University of Kentucky where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Sallee spent seven years working as an advertising account executive for The Lexington Herald-Leader before joining The Journal staff as its Regional Advertising Manager. Sallee is married to Jessamine County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Sallee and they have three children, Alicia, Madelyn, and Caroline. |
PEGGY ADKINS |
Peggy Adkins, Advertising/Marketing Consultant Peggy Adkins is an advertising/marketing consultant for The Jessamine Journal. She has helped local businesses in Jessamine County market their business since 1994. Peggy graduated from Rowan County High School in 1982. She attended Morehead State University from 1985 -1993 where she was advertising manager of the campus newspaper (The Trail Blazer) for five years. She graduated in 1991 with a bachelors degree in journalism/public relations and went on to receive her masters degree in communications in 1993. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and being involved in her church where she is a Sunday school teacher. She and her husband reside in Lexington. She has three children — two sons and one daughter. |

Brad Toy, Regional Advertising Director Brad is the Regional Advertising Manager for Advocate Communication, Inc. and started in April 2008. He worked for CNHI for 10 years in Morehead and Ashland, Ky. and was publisher at The Frankfort Times in Frankfort, Indiana. Brad has a BBA in Marketing from Morehead State University. Brad and his wife, Sandy, have one son, Zachary, and live in Mt. Sterling. Brad enjoys playing golf and is a member of the Central Ky. Umpires Association. |

Jill Sinkclear, Regional Circulation Director Jill Sinkclear, circulation director, has been with The Advocate-Messenger since August 2005. She came to central Kentucky from Hannibal, MO. She has been in the newspaper business since 1989. Jill lives in Danville with her three dogs, Ashley, Bella and Zoey. She has two daughters, Shauna Sinkclear of Danville and Rissa Sinkclear of Kansas City, MO. Her hobbies are sewing, crocheting, home improvement projects and shopping. |

Lori Yankey, Marketing Manager Lori Yankey has been with The Advocate-Messenger since 1985. She began as a District Manager for six years, circulation billing and accounting for four years, sales and single copy manager for 12 years, all with The Advocate circulation department. In September, 2007 Lori became Marketing Manager for Advocate Communications, Inc. Lori is a 1981 graduate of Boyle County High School and attended Cumberland College. She lives in Danville. She is also a Kentucky High School Athletic Association Basketball Official in the 12th Region. Lori enjoys sports, listening to music and being outdoors. |
JOHN PRESTON |
John Preston, Digital Media Manager John Preston is the Digital Media Manager for the The Advocate-Messenger, The Winchester Sun, The Jessamine Journal, and The Interior Journal. He was born and raised just 20 minutes from Danville in nearby Harrodsburg. John joined Schurz Communications after a seven-year stint as the news director for WBKO-TV in Bowling Green. There he managed one of the most successful small market television news operations in the country. Prior to that, John worked as a producer for America's Health Network, WOFL-TV in Orlando, WLEX-TV in Lexington, and WTVQ-TV in Lexington. He enjoys reading, writing, golfing, and crappie fishing in his spare time. John and his wife, Lynn, have one son, Jake. |
